The Earth is Smothering in Plastic

Can science save the world? Our planet is smothering under man-made plastic, created from gases.  These products are suffocating inhabitants of this “small, blue marble where everyone we know and love, lives.” Did you know that only 9% of plastic is recycled?

The European Union is ahead of us. They are taking the lead in advocating for a higher-level, legally binding global agreement, through the U.N., to end plastic pollution. It is imperative for the world to be less reliant on single-use, virgin plastic. There must be stricter rules on its production. Plastic production is complicated. It begins in the form of fossil fuel, extracted in one country, made into pellets, and shipped somewhere else where it is made into various consumer products, then shipped again before it is sold.

We need a new global plastics treaty. An international plastics treaty is our chance to stop plastic pollution by introducing global rules that will apply to every stage of the plastics life cycle. In the EU, they keep strengthening legislation to reduce plastic pollution. For example, there are new EU-wide rules to reduce packaging, and other new measures to place limits on microplastics. We need to hold our politicians accountable.

Revolution Plastics Campaign 2023

Revolution Plastics is an interdisciplinary initiative drawing together colleagues from across the country. The University of Portsmouth is assembling teams of researchers, business-leaders, campaigners, and citizens who share our commitment and ambition to transform the way we make, use, and dispose of the polluting material, plastic. Their Mission Statement from June, 2023, states: We’re on a mission to tackle the plastics crisis for our local community and the wider world. We are committed to facing global plastics problems. “Look again at that dot. That’s here. That’s home. That’s us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives.”

Carl Sagan, While Viewing Earth from Space
