Why Write

Utilize Your Free Speech Writing and Communication Tools. Tell Your Elected Officials What You Want

WHY WRITE
Provide information, opinions and perhaps encouragement. Some feel their message may not matter but we always hope for “better angels” to appear.
Writing helps organize your thoughts. You may find yourself thinking more efficiently when putting your thoughts in order on paper.
Let decision makers know there are democratic voters in Auburn who are paying attention to their legislative actions.
Venting…enough said.

*However, please remember that you are writng as one constituent/voter. You should never identify yourself as representing the Auburn Area Democratic Club*

TIPS
Keep it brief and to the point. Long letters may not have as much impact. However, if you need to provide specific data to support your point, that may be helpful.
Do not, in any way, even hint at a physical threat. This may be obvious but in these troubled times reminders of caution seem important.
You can write to any U.S. Senator but letters for Representatives will only be accepted and read from persons in their district.
Many feel that letters are more powerful than emails or phone calls and are recorded more quickly. There is some debate as to whether letters or phone calls share the same importance. Both avenues of communication serve an important service.
Some letter writers add a paragraph at the end of their letter, or email, sent to politicians, which is specifically directed to the clerk or aide who may be screening communications, in order to broaden their thinking on the actions of the politician.
POTENTIAL RECIPIENTS OF YOUR LETTERS
Municipal, State and Federal Policymakers.
The web addresses below provide excellent information and you will find the content of these addresses reflect the information you will find on their website.

In general you may wish to visit www.5calls.org, a site which provides a great deal of information regarding calls to your representatives. As the site suggests, phone calls are tallied by staffers right away, whereas mail and email take more time to tabulate.

Most, if not all, political figures have a Contact page on their website which provides email and snail mail addresses as well as phone numbers. In order to find your specific person there are mulitple sites such as https://www.ballotready.org where you can find representatives by federal, state, district and municipal categories simply by submitting your home address.

*Some members have also suggested that (after the November election) writing letters to the Governor-elect, encouraging him to take on issues that you as a constituent want the Governor’s office to focus on, is an important way to convey your concerns in their coming term*
