Report From Indivisible Auburn

By Pat Ferguson

This year, 2023, may seem like a slack year, but there is lots going on. There are elections that have major results happening in a number of states. For instance, Pennsylvania Democrats took back control of their house with three special election wins. Virginia will have November 2023 elections for their Senate and House of Delegates. It has been painful to watch the many egregious laws state electors have enacted recently: gerrymandering districts, overthrowing measures voted on by voters, and allowing arcane abortion laws to be re-introduced. This April is an extremely important election in Wisconsin. Their Supreme Court is down one member, and the remaining jurists are “tied” at two GOP and two Democrats on the bench. The election for a new judge will make a tremendous difference. If the Democrat wins, then the court can do something about the terribly gerrymandered districts and the strict anti-abortion law that was put in place in 1849. In addition, the court may play a part in the 2024 election if there are challenges like there were in 2020 and 2022. Indivisible Auburn has taken on a couple of actions to support Dems in this election. (See below)

Indivisible Auburn partners with other groups when their actions parallel our objectives. Right now, we are writing postcards for Wisconsin that are scripted by Field Team 6 which concentrates on registering potential Democratic voters. Starting February 24th, we will work in coordination with Swing Left/Vote Forward to write letters to sporadic voters to get them to the polls in Wisconsin. Activate America will also be doing a postcard campaign in the near future.

Blue states like California and New York are often given less attention because statewide elections are shoe-ins for Democratic candidates. However, that meant that competitive House races didn’t get the support needed as the DNC and others concentrated on the swing states. Swing Left and Indivisible Auburn will be concentrating on CA districts that could be flipped from Red to Blue.
