Tom McClintock likes to pretend that he actually cares about and will work for the things that matter to his constituents – things like protecting the Social Security and Medicare Trust Fund into which Americans contribute their entire lives. His pinned Tweet is a video discussing the importance of shoring up the Trust Fund. And so his silence this week is deafening, as the President lays out his plans to decimate the Trust Fund.
This week President Trump told us in no uncertain terms that he will destroy the Social Security and Medicare Trust Fund if we let him. The Trust Fund already is underfunded. As McClintock has acknowledged, its reserves will be depleted within the next generation if we don’t take steps to increase the funding or, his preference, reduce the benefits older Americans receive. Yet, President Trump is taking action to reduce the funding of the Trust Fund. He issued an Executive Order on August 8, 2020, directing the Treasury Secretary to defer payroll tax obligations, using the COVID-19 pandemic as an excuse. As this article explains, “the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget has estimated that up to $100 billion in payroll tax revenue flowing into Social Security could at least be delayed under Trump’s action.” And the President has made clear that if he is re-elected, he will terminate the payroll tax in its entirety. Engaging in the magical thinking that underlies all of his fantastical claims to the American people, Trump insists that growth will fill that enormous void. There’s no factual basis for that, as this article explains. If Trump is allowed to do it, he will destroy Social Security and Medicare, ending two programs that have provided critical stability to seniors for decades.
Tom McClintock has been doing the rounds this campaign season, appearing on KAHI Radio and again on Newsmax. In the Newsmax interview, he engaged in his usual fear-mongering, pointing to a St. Louis couple who aimed weapons at protesters and falsely claiming that the protesters broke a gate, in his attempt to defend the couple’s armed threats against peaceful protesters. Invoking that same St. Louis couple, he lied about Kamala Harris’ position regarding “stand your ground” laws, falsely claiming that they are designed protect the home, although in Missouri the Castle Doctrine does that. The one glaring thing he didn’t do – and hasn’t done at all, so far as we can tell – is push back against his President’s efforts to destroy Social Security and Medicare. He hasn’t said a thing about that critical issue, and he certainly hasn’t done anything to protect the Trust Fund that belongs to each of us.
California’s 4th District deserves better. We deserve a representative who sees our challenges with clear eyes and takes meaningful action to fix them. We deserve a representative who truly cares about what happens in this District. We deserve a representative who will fight for us.

Because we know, as Margaret Mead said, that “a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”
